Why Aren't More Men in Social Work?

Queen P & Queen H Season 4 Episode 1

Send us a text

We’re back with Season 4 of the Queens of Social Work podcast! Thank you to all our amazing listeners for your continued support and thoughtful questions. To kick off the season, we’re diving into a powerful topic inspired by one of your requests: “Why Aren’t More Black Men in Social Work?”

Social work is a field dominated by women, and the presence of men—especially Black men—is significantly underrepresented. To unpack this nuanced question, we invited Christopher Scott, also known as King C and the Hip Hop Social Worker, to share his perspective.

Christopher, based in Portland, Oregon, is a school social worker, clinician, and host of the podcast The Hip Hop Social Worker. Through his work, he highlights the importance of representation in social work, particularly for Black men, and inspires others with his “Why Not Me?” philosophy.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The barriers that discourage men, especially Black men, from entering social work
  • The importance of representation in social work and how it impacts the profession
  • Christopher’s journey into social work and the unique challenges he’s faced
  • Tips for encouraging more men to consider careers in social work

You can connect with Christopher on Instagram and Twitter at @hiphopsocialworker or visit his website at hiphopsocialworker.com for more insights and resources.

This is a must-listen episode for social workers, educators, and anyone invested in diversifying the profession and amplifying male voices in social work.
